EL MONTE (CNS) – Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are assisting the El Monte Police Department in the investigation of a fatal shooting after a pursuit, authorities said Tuesday.

The shooting occurred Monday in the 11000 block of Valley Boulevard and Tyler Avenue, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported.

Earlier, El Monte Police Department officers responded to a report of a customer who was causing a disturbance and brandishing a gun at a Target store at 8:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Peck Road, near Sitka Street. When they arrived, the suspect drove away in a dark-colored car, refused commands to stop and a police pursuit ensued, ABC 7 reported.

The suspect abandoned the car near a Chase bank location. At some point, police opened fire and shot the suspect.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and officers recovered a gun at the scene of the shooting, police said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire personnel and no officers were injured during the shooting.
