Man Dead After Chain Reaction Crash

According to the AZ DPS captain on the scene, troopers are investigating a multi-vehicle collision that left 2 people injured and 1 adult male dead.
The incident unfolded at approximately 1:25 AM when a black sedan rear-ended a stalled Dodge Charger blocking the HOV lane on the westbound 202 near 40th Street.
Moments later, a secondary collision occurred involving multiple vehicles.
Troopers arrived to find an unresponsive adult male in the roadway and several damaged vehicles blocking multiple lanes.
A black sedan that struck the stalled Dodge Charger was found against the guardrail with an adult female driver trapped inside.
The driver was extricated by fire crews and transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The unresponsive male found lying in the travel lanes was pronounced deceased on scene.
An additional adult female from one of the involved vehicles was also hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A total of 5 vehicles were involved in the incident.
Impairment is being investigated as a possible contributing factor in this collision.
Preliminary information gathered by DPS detectives on the scene suggests the adult male fatality was an occupant of a vehicle involved in the secondary collision.
It is unknown if the male was ejected or struck after exiting his vehicle.
The westbound Red Mountain was closed from State Route 143 to 40th Street.
