Man Carjacks Cop, Steals Unmarked Car | Chula Vista

04.13.2022 | 8:56 PM | CHULA VISTA – An off-duty El Cajon Police officer was at a 7/11 store on Magnolia Ave in Santee, when he was attempting to leave, the male suspect got in front of the truck. The officer got out of the vehicle and a confrontation took place. The suspect car-jacked the officer’s truck and fled. Deputies searched for the truck and could not find it. At approx 11:15 pm, Lakeside area deputies received reports of an armed male with a handgun in his waistband being seen at a Jack-in-the-Box on Lake Jennings Rd. & Olde Hwy 80. Deputies arrived and found the suspect in the truck and a pursuit began. The pursuit went westbound on the I-8 to westbound Hwy 94. The suspect then hit the SR-125 and went through Spring Valley and then south into Chula Vista. The suspect crossed the center median and went the wrong way on the SR-125 and took the Birch Ave onramp still going the wrong direction. Spike strips were attempted on several occasions, but the suspect avoided them. The suspect made his way to the Otay Ranch Mall, where he crashed into and sheared a fire hydrant. The suspect ran and was pursued by the deputies, officers, and an El Cajon K-9, and was tased. 1 Deputy and 1 El Cajon officer were bit by the K-9 when attempting to arrest the suspect. The suspect appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic. During the pursuit, Deputies were made aware that the truck was an undercover vehicle and had an AR-15 rifle and a Glock handgun inside a lockbox with ammo inside. The suspect threw a handgun out of the truck during the pursuit. The suspect was able to turn on the vehicle’s police code lights while he was fleeing. The suspect reached speeds up to 100 mph at times. The suspect was transported to a local hospital due to his being under the influence.
