Male Injured, Woman Critical After Extrication Crash

Firefighters from the cities of Phoenix and Tempe responded to reports of a serious 2 vehicle collision with people trapped at the intersection of 40th Street and University Drive shortly after 12:30 AM.

Upon arrival, crews found a collision involving a crossover SUV and a pickup truck.

2 occupants inside the SUV, an adult male and an adult female, were pinned inside.

Firefighters utilized heavy extrication equipment to cut the occupants from the vehicle.

The driver of the pickup was able to self extricate and refused hospitalization following an on scene medical evaluation.

According to Phoenix Police, the male occupant of the SUV was transported to a nearby trauma center in serious but stable condition.

The adult female was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken into custody by officers following a field sobriety test.

Impairment is suspected but will not be confirmed until further test have been conducted.
