Los Angeles: Massive Sinkhole Consumes Cars, Floods Neighborhood

12.21.2018 | 5:00 AM | LOS ANGELES – A water main break resulted in a massive sinkhole that consumer several parked vehicles and flooded a neighborhood, Friday morning.

Fire officials responded to reports of the flooding near the intersection of 55th Street and Towne Avenue around 5:00 AM.

Crews arriving on scene discovered a massive sinkhole with substantial flooding and requested a response from the water department.

For hours water continued to flow while authorities worked to secure the flow of water while evacuating nearby residences.

The extent of damage caused by the water main break and resulting sinkhole was not immediately known but at least two vehicles appeared to be total losses.

It was unclear how long it might take to repair the water main which officials said was 24-inches in diameter.
