Los Angeles County: Winds Cause Damage Across Southland

04.09.2019 | Wednesday Evening | Los Angeles County – A winter storm system moving out of the state brought gusty winds to much of the southland, Wednesday evening.

Thousands of Southern California Edison customers lost power as gusty winds knocked over trees and power lines.

Around 7:25 PM, a tree fell into the westbound lanes of the I-10 freeway at Crenshaw Blvd in the Jefferson Park area of Los Angeles.

The #3 & #4 lanes were blocked for close to three hours as CalTrans crews worked to remove the tree from lanes.

At 8:45 PM, power lines came down onto the 15600 Block of Pioneer Blvd in Norwalk, creating a fiery show of sparks that forced the road to be shut down in both directions.

15 minutes later, Long Beach Firefighters responded to a reported tree down at the 5200 Block of Linden Ave. The tree fell across a driveway, damaging a car and nearly striking a home & apartment building.

Around 11:30 PM, LAFD Firefighters responded to the 3700 Block of Midvale Ave for two palm trees that went down into the street. Public works crews were summoned to assist in clearing the area.

The wind continued into the morning, where a large tree blew into a 5 story apartment building at the 500 Block of Kelton Ave around 12:45 AM. The LAFD responded to the scene, where the tree struck the occupied apartment building. The situation was deemed static, and city crews were going to come out that morning to cut the tree down.

Of all these incidents, amazingly no one was injured, and all power was eventually restored to all DWP and Southern California Edison customers alike.
