Loop 202 Double Fatal Wrong-Way Crash

LOCATION: Northbound South Mountain 202 North of Elliot Road

DETAILS:
- According to the DPS Sergeant on scene,
- Troopers were notified by a Flux wrong-way detector activation about a vehicle the entered the South Mountain Loop 202 traveling southbound in the northbound lanes at Baseline Road at 2:16 AM.
- Moments later, ADOT camera operators notified troopers that the wrong way driver struck a vehicle head on near Elliot Road.
- Troopers and several Phoenix Fire crews responded to the scene and found 2 sedans with heavy front end damage.
- The drivers from both vehicles were trapped.
- Phoenix Fire crews began cutting their way into the vehicles to access the drivers.
- Both the wrong way driver and the driver from the other sedan were pronounced deceased on scene at approximately 2:25 AM.
- The drivers are both adult males.
- The northbound lanes of South Mountain 202 are closed at Elliot Road.
- The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.
- Troopers are working to determine which of the involved vehicles were traveling wrong way at the time of the crash.
