LAPD Shooting After Freeway Pursuit Leaves Driver Dead
At approximately 9:48 a.m. on April 8, 2026, Los Angeles Police Department officers initiated a pursuit of a felony suspect in the area of Seventh Street and Towne Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The pursuit continued onto the southbound 5 Freeway and ultimately ended on the Olympic Boulevard off-ramp in East Los Angeles after the suspect vehicle collided with an LAPD SUV.
Following the crash, officers fired shots at the vehicle under circumstances that remain under investigation. A passenger was seen crawling out of the vehicle and was taken into custody by officers before being treated by paramedics. The driver was also removed from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire department personnel.
Authorities stated the vehicle was believed to be stolen, and a weapon was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting, though two were transported to a hospital as a precaution.
The incident prompted a large police presence on the freeway off-ramp, which officials noted helped reduce the risk to bystanders. The investigation into the crash and officer-involved shooting remains ongoing.
