La Mesa: Unruly Protest Results In Looting, Fires

05.30.2020 | 2:00 PM | LA MESA – Protests turned into riots and resulted in looting and fires, Saturday.

Groups of protesters marching to demand justice for the recent killing of George Floyd began rioting and later looting as the day progressed.

The group had initially rushed the La Mesa Police Department before fleeing onto the I-8 Freeway around 2:00 PM.

A group of protesters converged on the La Mesa Police Station nad pelted officers with rocks and bottles prompting the officers to fire pepper ball rounds around 5:45 PM. Tear gas canisters were also deployed and several people were injured but the extent of those injuries was unclear.

As the dark of night approached protesters began looting and burning vehicles including several work trucks, several cars, an American Legion, two banks, and an American flag.

A jewelry store and Wal-Mart was also looted shortly before midnight.

It was unclear how many arrests were made.

Riots and looting has continued into early Sunday morning prompting a massive response from nearby law enforcement agencies.
