Kidnapping Suspect Shot After Killing Victim In Trunk

A kidnapping suspect was shot and killed by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies Wednesday night after allegedly shooting a kidnapping victim who was being held inside the trunk of a vehicle following a short pursuit in Chino Hills.

At approximately 10:14 p.m. on July 29, 2026, deputies responded to the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive after a caller reported hearing gunshots and someone screaming.

While responding, deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop. The driver failed to yield, leading deputies on a short pursuit that ended in the 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, two men were inside the vehicle. The passenger complied with deputies’ commands and was taken into custody without incident. The driver, however, exited the vehicle, walked to the open trunk, and fired a gun into the trunk.

A deputy-involved shooting then occurred, and the suspect was struck.

Deputies discovered an adult male inside the trunk who had been shot by the suspect. Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures on both the victim and the suspect, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined the victim had been shot and kidnapped from the Monteverde Drive address before the pursuit began.

The passenger remains in custody and was not injured. Detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail have assumed the investigation. No deputies were injured during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
