Impaired Driver Crashes into AZ DPS Sergeant

According to a statement by an AZ DPS Sergeant on the scene:

An adult male is in custody for driving while impaired after crashing into a DPS Sergeant on the South Mountain 202 around 5:30 AM.

The Sergeant was stationary inside his patrol SUV, on the right shoulder of the southbound Dobbins offramp, finishing a report from an earlier incident, when a male in a Nissan SUV collided with the rear of his DPS Tahoe.

The impact resulted in the Nissan rolling over, landing on its roof.

The Sergeant exited his patrol vehicle and approached the overturned Nissan, assisting the driver as he self extricated.

Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and evaluated both the DPS Sergeant and the adult male from the Nissan.

Both refused medical treatment, miraculously escaping the ordeal without injury.

Once medically cleared, troopers administered a field sobriety test on the driver of the Nissan.

The driver exhibited obvious signs of impairment and was taken into DPS custody.

The incident resulted in a 1 hour closure of the southbound Dobbins off ramp.
