Huntington Beach: Pilot Performs Emergency Landing In Beachfront Parking Lot
03.30.2020 | 4:34 PM | HUNTINGTON BEACH – A pilot performed a successful emergency landing onto a beachfront parking lot that was empty due to public health orders amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Monday evening.
Authorities responded to reports of an aircraft down at Huntington State Beach near the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway around 4:34 PM.
Units arriving on scene located a 2006 AeroVee powered Sonex sport aircraft that had landed without incident in the state beach parking lot.
The pilot reported he was cruising when he observed a rapid drop in fuel levels and attempted to return to John Wayne Airport.
The aircraft’s engine began seizing forcing the pilot to quickly plot an emergency landing which was performed without incident.
The parking lot was empty at the time of the landing due to a public health order to limit the spread of COVID-19.
No injuries were reported and authorities are making arrangements to return the aircraft to John Wayne Airport.
