Human Remains Found In Steep Terrain Near Palomar

Human remains were discovered in steep terrain below a roadway near Palomar Wednesday evening, prompting an investigation and recovery operation.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on August 12, 2026, authorities received reports of a strong odor believed to be coming from a body near mile marker 474 along South Grade Road.

Search and Rescue crews responded and began searching the steep terrain below the roadway. During the search, crews located what appeared to be human remains.

A crime scene was established, and the area was expected to remain secured overnight until detectives and additional crews could return in daylight to continue the investigation and recovery.

The remains were located approximately three miles from where Angelica Brophy was reportedly last seen on July 6.

At this time, there is no confirmed connection between the remains and Brophy’s disappearance. Investigators will work to identify the remains and determine whether any connection exists.
