Houston: Nurse Killed By Stray Bullet From Celebratory New Year’s Gunfire

01.01.2020 | 12:05 AM | HOUSTON – A 61-year-old woman was dead after being struck by a stray bullet from celebratory New Year’s gunfire, early Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a woman down suffering from a gunshot wound to her head at the end of a cul-de-sac located in the 12300 block of May Laurel Drive around 12:05 AM.

Units arriving on scene located 61-year-old woman, later identified as Philippa Ashford, deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.

During their investigation officials determined that Ashford was celebrating New Year’s with her family by lighting off fireworks when she yelled that she had been shot.

She died moments later from what officials believe was a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire.

Ashford was a 12-year veteran nurse manager at the Menninger Clinic and board-certified in psychiatric nursing. She was referred to as “Phil” by her friends.
