Homeowner’s Mental Break Leads to Police Response

Phoenix Police responded to a 911 call around 2 AM from a resident claiming his home near 63rd Place and Acoma Drive was being broken into. The homeowner told officers he had already shot and killed 2 assailants. As officers arrived they heard active gunfire from inside the home. Officers quickly learned that the homeowner who was firing shots was mentally deranged and that there was no burglary taking place. The armed suspect fired an unknown number of times inside the home as officers surrounded the residence and evacuated nearby residents. It is unclear if the shots were targeted towards officers. Officers requested SWAT resources from the Glendale Police Department as the Phoenix Special Assignments Unit was unavailable due to a training detail. Glendale SWAT responded to the scene with several armored vehicles including an armored skid steer known as “The Rook”. SWAT units surrounded the home and eventually apprehended the suspect without further incident. The homeowner / suspect is an adult male. He was evaluated by Phoenix Fire personnel as a precaution before being taken from the scene by officers. No injuries have been reported and residents have been allowed back into their homes.
