Homeowner Shoots At Burglary Suspect Running From LAPD

On September 5, 2025, at approximately 12:00 a.m., LAPD Topanga Division officers were in foot pursuit of an armed burglary suspect.

The suspect fled through a wash near Vanowen Street and De Soto Avenue. During his attempt to escape, the suspect tried to enter a residence on the 20700 block of Basset Street by climbing through a window. The homeowner, who had been awakened by police activity and helicopter noise, heard the intruder and fired a gunshot at the suspect but missed.

The suspect then fled back toward De Soto Avenue, where the LAPD air unit located him and directed ground officers. The suspect was ultimately apprehended near the wash at Independence Avenue and the LA River.

Officers took a statement from the homeowner. No one inside the residence was harmed, though children in the home were reported to be startled by the incident.
