Homeless Encampment Erupts in Flames

INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 10/23/2025 12:43 p.m.
LOCATION: East 08th Street & Paradise Dr.
AREA/CITY: National City
DETAILS:

1. A large homeless encampment fire broke out for unknown reasons off of East Eighth Street near the I-805 freeway.
2. National City Fire Department responded to a large pile of items and debris that was burning causing billowing black smoke that could be seen from the I-805 freeway. The California Highway Patrol responded but the freeway was not impacted.
3. A stretch of East Eighth Street from Euclid Ave. to R Ave. was shut down during the duration of the fire which caused numerous motorists to find alternate routes.
4. There are no reports of injuries, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
5. Took Firefighters approximately 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.
