Historic Harris Building 3rd Alarm Fire

DETAILS:

  1. On October 24th, 2024, at about 12:09 AM, San Bernardino County Fire responded to a reported fire at the Historic Harris Building near 2nd Street and E Street in San Bernardino.
  2. The first engine on the scene reported heavy black smoke from the roof.
  3. Transients leaving the building reported that up to 5 people may still be inside, but no one was located.
  4. A second and third alarm was requested due to the size of the building and the manpower needed.
  5. Access was difficult as all of the doors were covered in reinforced steel.
  6. A zone retreat occurred as the roof started sagging, and a collapse occurred.
  7. The fire was controlled about two and a half hours after the dispatch.
  8. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  9. No injuries were reported.
  10. Firefighters had an extensive overhaul due to the roof collapse.
  11. Fourteen Engines, four trucks, four chiefs, an investigator, and an incident support rig responded to the fire.
