High-Speed Chase Ends in Dramatic Crash

Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a white Mercedes hatchback at an unknown location.
The suspect refused to yield to officers and felony flight was established.
The decision was made to initiate a tactical surveillance operation rather than pursue the vehicle.
DPS State Gang Task Force Units, and Phoenix Police Tactical Support Bureau units followed at a safe distance while the Phoenix Police air unit tracked the suspect from above, providing updates to officers on the ground.
The vehicle led units throughout the cities of Phoenix and Glendale.
The Mercedes eventually traveled East on Indian School Road before turning around at 19th Ave and returning West.
As the Mercedes approached the intersection of I-17 and Indian School Road, it ran a red light and collided with a Chevy Tahoe.
The crash left both vehicles severely damaged and blocked all lanes of Westbound Indian School Road.
Several ground units quickly converged on the scene of the crash and surrounded the suspect’s vehicle.
Officers rushed to help the occupants of the Chevy Tahoe and escorted them to safety, away from the active scene.
Officers and State Gang Task Force operatives with guns drawn, ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle.
The suspect was noncompliant and refused to exit.
A brief vehicle barricade situation was established as the suspect continued to ignore commands from officers.
Officers utilized less lethal baton rounds to break the suspect’s windows and then deployed pepper balls inside the vehicle.
An arrest team then approached the vehicle and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is currently being treated for minor injuries sustained during the crash.
One of the occupants of the vehicle that was struck was also transported to the hospital.
His condition is unknown.
The incident resulted in an hour-long closure of the Indian School Road I-17 overpass.
