Heavy-Duty Tow Truck Slams Into Stopped Traffic Causing Fiery Crash

LOCATION: Loop 375 South at Montana Ave Off-ramp
CITY: El Paso
DETAILS: A high-speed rear-end crash involving a heavy-duty tow truck and 9 vehicles was reported at 5;29 PM on Loop 375 before Montana Ave. off-ramp. El Paso Fire Department, El Paso Police along with EPCSO responded to the scene. According to scanner traffic at the time, people were trapped in their vehicles after the fiery crash. The initial investigation revealed the heavy tow truck driver was traveling north on Loop 375. Traffic began to slow due to heavy traffic along Loop 375. Due to the slowdown, Zubia attempted to swerve to avoid the Ford Edge. However, unable to do so struck the rear of the vehicle. This caused a series of chain reaction collisions. Unit #2 was pushed into unit #3 and then into unit #4. Unit #2 caught fire and was redirected, striking the rear of unit #5. Units #6,7 and 8 attempted to avoid the crash but could not. As a result, all vehicles except units #8 and 9 caught fire. All drivers were transported to a local hospital except the Driver, a 28-yr old male from unit #4, who died at the scene.
