Hacienda Heights: Dog Saves Sleeping Family From Burning Home

04.02.2019 | 12:11 AM | HACIENDA HEIGHTS – A family dog is credited with saving a couple’s and their son’s lives from a fire that broke out at their home, early Thursday morning.

Crews responded to the reported structure fire in the 1500 block of South Farmstead Avenue around 12:11 AM.

Units arriving on scene located a single-story home with heavy smoke and fire showing and began efforts to attack the blaze.

Within 20 minutes firefighters had control of the blaze and ensured the home was clear of any victims.

Jose Hernandez tells us that he was sleeping inside the home when their dog Chewbacca, or “Chuy”, ran into their bedroom and started barking. The front of the house was covered in a wall of flames, so the family of three had to jump out of their bedroom window.

The family along with Chuy and their other dog were able to escape the blaze unharmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
