Gilroy: Mass Shooting At Garlic Festival Leaves Four Dead, 12 Injured

07.28.2019 | 6:00 PM | GILROY – An mass shooting left four people, including the shooter, dead and at least 12 others injured at the iconic Gilroy Garlic Festival, Sunday evening.

Authorities responded to reports of an active shooter at the 41st annual Gilroy Garlic Festival around 6:00 PM.

Officers stationed at the festival quickly located the rifle-toting gunman within a minute of shots ringing out and confronted him.

An officer-involved shooting ensued leaving the gunman dead.

Firefighter paramedics treated at least 12 victims suffering from injuries related to the shooting and pronounced three victims, including a 6-year-old boy, deceased on scene.

Initial reports indicate the gunman, later identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan, cut through a fence to enter the festival before opening fire. Police described Legan’s weapon as being a “rifle”.

The shooting appeared to be random however authorities were still investigating the motive behind the shooting.

A second individual possibly related to the shooting is being sought by authorities however further information regarding the second individual was not immediately disclosed.
