Gann Fire Explodes To 6,495 Acres, Homes Destroyed

Multiple homes, including large estate properties, have been destroyed as the explosive Gann Fire continues to burn out of control in Calaveras County.

The fire began around 5:30 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2026, and rapidly spread through steep terrain and critically dry vegetation amid triple-digit temperatures and extremely low humidity.

Firefighters initially attempted to hold the blaze to approximately 50 acres, but numerous spot fires quickly complicated suppression efforts. The fire rapidly grew beyond 1,000 acres and continued burning actively throughout the night.

By Tuesday morning, shifting winds began pushing the fire in multiple directions. Around 10:00 a.m., fire activity intensified significantly, threatening hundreds of homes and several communities.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Gann Fire had been mapped at approximately 6,495 acres with 0% containment.

Multiple homes have been destroyed as flames move through the area. Air resources have also been grounded at times due to poor visibility caused by the fire’s dense and erratically shifting smoke column.

Firefighters from CAL FIRE and numerous assisting agencies continue working to protect threatened communities and slow the fire’s spread.

The Gann Fire remains active and conditions can change rapidly.
