Firetruck Gets Stuck in Sinkhole, Rescued by LAFD & LACoFD | Monterey Park
2.23.2021 | 11:34 PM | MONTEREY PARK – A fire engine was lifted into the air by two heavy rescue trucks from separate agencies after a broken water main opened up a sinkhole directly underneath a fire engine Tuesday night, causing the engine to become stuck.
Monterey Park FD Firefighters responded to the 1500 Block of S Mira Valle Street shortly after 11:30 PM regarding major flooding in the area.
When officials arrived on scene they found a large amount of water gushing into the street, with mud and other debris actively flowing down the street.
As the fire engine was entering the street, it ran over the sink hole, which was hidden by the water. Once they stopped the engine, it only grew bigger and bigger underneath the truck.
Firefighters were able to turn off the water within 20 minutes of their arrival.
About an hour later, LA City Fire Heavy Rescue personnel and LA County Fire Heavy Rescue personnel banded together to lift the fire engine out of the sink hole.
The rescue took about an hour to be completed, requiring the two large trucks to park on either side of the stuck engine and lifting it out from over the hole. The recovery operation took about one hour to complete.
No one was injured in the incident.
