Fin Whale Washes Up On Rat Beach

INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 8-10-24 5:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Rat Beach
AREA/CITY: Torrance
DETAILS:

1. At around 5:00 p.m. a foot juvenile fin whale washed up at Rat Beach.
2. The Marine Mammal Center, LACO Lifeguards, and multiple fire agencies responded to the scene.
3. The Marine Mammal Care Center flew a drone over head to determine the size and species of the whale.
4. Per John Warner, the Fin whale looked to be sick and underweight.
5. Dozens of onlookers gathered around the whale, taking pictures and videos.
6. Unfortunately, after flying the drone overhead, it was determined that the whale had passed away.
