Fiery Crash Involving Brush, Bel Air Crest

A dramatic overnight crash sent a vehicle off the southbound 405 Freeway and onto Sepulveda Boulevard below, prompting a multi-agency emergency response in the Bel Air area early Saturday morning.
The incident was reported just before 2:00 a.m. when California Highway Patrol officers observed a vehicle off the freeway near Bel Air Crest Road. Initial reports indicated the vehicle had gone over the freeway embankment and landed on city streets below near Sepulveda Boulevard.
CHP requested assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department, which assumed the investigation on the city streets where the vehicle came to rest. Responding officers checked the southbound freeway for damage to determine where the vehicle left the roadway. Authorities reported there was no apparent damage to the main freeway guardrail.
The crash also sparked a fire, with smoke drifting across the southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway and affecting traffic. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to extinguish the blaze and requested lane closures beginning near Skirball Center Drive and extending toward Getty Center Drive. The two right lanes were shut down to allow firefighters to safely operate at the scene.
It was initially unclear whether anyone was inside the vehicle when first responders arrived. The condition of any occupants has not been released. Word at the scene driver fled.
The incident was cleared shortly before 2:40 a.m., and the California Highway Patrol closed its portion of the response. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
