Fatal Human Smuggling Panga Boat Incident | La Jolla

05.20.2021 | 5:10 AM | LA JOLLA – U.S. Border Patrol was sitting in an unmarked vehicle at the end of Marine St overwatching the beach when a panga boat full of people attempted to come in to off-load approx 18 people. When the agent was spotted, the pilot threw off at least 10 of the people into the water and fled north along the coastline. 2 people came ashore and were apprehended. 8 people had to be rescued by the SD City Lifeguard who was in the water. They were transferred to the Lifeguard headquarters to be handed over to the Border Patrol. The pilot of the boat landed at the beach along Coast Blvd, just south of the Children’s Pool, 7 people ran up the beach and many were captured. One man drowned and an Agent and Lifeguards attempted life-saving measures, but it did not work. Coast Guard helos and boats are searching for others in the water.
