Fatal Fiery Wrong Way Freeway Crash | Los Angeles

6.19.21 | 2:55 AM | LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A 21-year-old Los Angeles man was killed when he drove his car the wrong way on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, crashed into a Ford pickup truck and burst into flames, authorities said Sunday.

The crash occurred at about 2 a.m. Saturday on the westbound Santa Monica Freeway near Bundy Drive, according to California Highway Patrol Officer D. Osborne.

The 37-year-old driver of a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck swerved to the center divider to avoid the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer that was eastbound in westbound lanes but the vehicles still collided, Osborne said.

The Lancer burst into flames with the driver inside and the pickup truck driver and witnesses who stopped to help were unable to free him, the officer said. He was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters put out the flames.

The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries but was not transported to a hospital.

All westbound lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted off the freeway at Bundy Drive until the far right lane was reopened just after 4 a.m. The remaining westbound lanes were reopened at 6:18 a.m., Osborne said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Osborne at the CHP West Los Angeles Area office at 310-642-3939.
