Fatal Ejection Crash | La Costa

03.23.2022 | 2:51 AM | LA COSTA – Isidrone Martinez, a 20-year-old Oceanside resident was driving a grey Honda Civic on I-5 northbound, south of La Costa Avenue, through a Caltrans construction zone, with a hard closure in place, which shut down the #3 and #4 northbound lanes.

Four passengers occupied the Honda Civic, which included: two 20-year-old male Oceanside residents, a 20-year-old female Oceanside resident, and a 22-year-old female Valley Center resident.

For reasons still under investigation, the Honda Civic veered to the right into the Caltrans closure. The Honda Civic then veered back to the left, towards the #2 lane, where it collided into the right rear of a grey Toyota Prius. The Prius was being driven by a 33-year-old San Diego resident and seated in the left rear of the Toyota Prius was a 33-year-old male San Diego resident.

After the Honda Civic collided with the Toyota Prius, the Honda veered to the right up an embankment causing the Honda Civic to rollover an unknown number of times. As the Honda rolled, one of the 20-year-old male passengers was ejected from the vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol and Fire/paramedics responded to the scene. Unfortunately, the 20-year-old male passenger, who was ejected, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver, Martinez, was taken to a local area hospital for major life-threatening injuries. The other Honda Civic passengers were all transported to local area hospitals for major injuries.

Both the Prius’ 33-year-old driver and passenger sustained minor injuries because of this collision.

The roadway was affected from the time of the collision until approximately 8:20 a.m., as the scene was investigated.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this traffic collision.

The Honda Civic driver, Isidrone Martinez, was arrested and is facing multiple charges related to this incident including felony DUI causing death.
