Fatal Deputy Involved Shooting at Sprouts Market in Rancho Cucamonga

DATE/TIME:  August 3, 2024, 9:34 p.m.

INCIDENT:  Lethal Force Encounter (LFE)

LOCATION: Sprouts Farmer’s Market, 6753 Carnelian Street, Rancho Cucamonga

SUSPECT(S): Davonte Sykes, Adult Male, 31-years-old, Resident of Los Angeles

VICTIMS:  San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies

SUMMARY: On Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 9:34 p.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station responded to Vons located at 8778 19th Street for the report of a man with a gun.  When deputies arrived on scene, witnesses reported the suspect walked across the street near Walgreens Pharmacy.  When deputies arrived at Walgreens, they encountered the suspect, later identified as Davonte Sykes, armed with a handgun.  Sykes fired upon the deputy and the first Lethal Force Encounter (LFE) occurred.  Sykes continued into Sprouts Farmer’s Market where a second LFE occurred.  Sykes was struck by gunfire and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

During the incident a second deputy sustained a superficial wound, was transported to the hospital and released shortly after.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division also responded and has assumed the investigation. Through further investigation, detectives believe Sykes may have been involved in a shooting in Upland, about an hour before the LFE in Rancho Cucamonga.
