A fatal traffic collision investigation in Moreno Valley took a dramatic turn after authorities discovered one of the drivers had suffered a gunshot wound.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:12 a.m. on June 23, 2026, to the area of 2nd Street and Z Street regarding an assault with a deadly weapon investigation.
When deputies arrived, they learned California Highway Patrol officers had already responded to a two-vehicle collision at the location. Both drivers had been transported to local hospitals in critical condition.
Authorities later confirmed that one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries. During the investigation, it was determined the deceased individual had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.
The Moreno Valley Investigations Bureau assumed control of the investigation and is working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting and subsequent crash.
Several media outlets have identified the deceased as an employee of the American Forces Network (AFN), the official broadcast service of the United States Armed Forces.
Investigators have not released information regarding a suspect, motive, or how the shooting may be connected to the collision.
