Fatal, 2 Horseback Riders Hit on Highway 371, In Anza,CA

According to Officer Murawski with California Highway Patrol, San Gorgonio/Beaumont office there was a group of approximately 6 horseback riders riding on the shoulder of the road when a car heading Westbound at about 45 miles an hour approached and spooked one of the horses. That horse ran into the road and one of the other horseback riders went to assist and both riders and both horses were hit by a vehicle. One woman in her 40s was killed and pronounced deceased at the scene by Cal Fire, Riverside County paramedics. The second rider was airlifted by REACH air ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center,  her condition is unknown. Both horses were hit and killed in the collision. CHP has Highway 371 at Maze Stone Rd to Contreras Rd. closed for the investigation.

The driver of the car that hit the horseback riders did remain at the scene and was cooperating with police.  CHP did not mention the driver being impaired and said they were not injured in the crash.
