Explosion Destroys Garage In West Adams Neighborhood

At approximately 5:35 a.m. on May 9, 2026, firefighters responded to a reported house fire on South 9th Avenue in the West Adams area of Los Angeles.

Neighbors described hearing a powerful explosion before flames engulfed a converted garage at the end of a cul-de-sac. Witnesses compared the scene to a fireworks display as debris and shockwaves impacted nearby homes.

Surrounding residences were evacuated as firefighters and hazmat crews investigated the scene.

Two nearby residents suffered injuries to their arms and legs during the incident. One victim was transported to a hospital while another was treated at the scene.

Authorities requested arson investigators, cadaver dogs, building and safety officials, and additional specialized resources as crews searched through the debris.
