Encinitas: Man Intentionally Drives U-Haul Truck Into Crowd Outside Bar

03.01.2020 | 1:19 AM | ENCINITAS – A drunken man who drove a U-Haul truck into a crowd outside a bar in retaliation seriously injured three people, early Sunday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a vehicle into a crowd outside The Saloon Bar located in the 500 block of South Coast Highway 101 around 1:19 AM.

Units arriving on scene located a U-Haul van that had crashed into a crowd of people just outside the bar.

Three people were seriously injured in the initial crash and two others suffered minor injuries while detaining the man after he crashed.

Firefighter paramedics treated all five victims on scene before transporting them to area hospitals. The three victims struck by the van were reported to be in serious condition while the bystanders who detained the driver suffered only minor injuries.

Initial reports indicate the driver of the van, later identified as 28-year-old Christian Dwight Davis, was asked to leave the bar because of his state of intoxication.

Davis left the bar but returned in his van and intentionally struck the victims standing in front of the bar.

After crashing two bystanders detained Davis until deputies arrived.

Davis was placed under arrest and taken to the Vista Detention Facility where he faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of attempting to escape with force.

An arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday although the incident remains under investigation.
