Driver Trapped After High-Speed Crash Into Utility Pole

At approximately 12:02 a.m. on July 1, 2026, Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters, Moreno Valley Fire personnel, and California Highway Patrol officers responded to a serious traffic collision on Gilman Springs Road just north of Quail Ranch Road, east of Moreno Valley.

Emergency crews arrived to find a heavily damaged vehicle that had left the roadway, traveled up an embankment, and crashed into a utility pole with enough force to shear it off.

The driver was trapped inside the wreckage, prompting firefighters to perform an extensive extrication before the patient could be freed.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

A second occupant was evaluated at the scene and was not injured.

Preliminary investigators believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle struck the raised concrete center median. The driver then reportedly overcorrected, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and collide with the utility pole.

Authorities have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
