Driver Rescued by CHP Officer from Horrific Fiery Crash

LOCATION: NB SR-163 & Frazee Rd (Extra Storage Facility)

DETAILS:
- Witnesses told the CHP that the driver was speeding northbound from Friars Rd on the northbound transition ramp to the northbound SR-163.
- He suddenly lost control and went off the freeway and down the embankment, crashing into the Extra Storage Facility and causing a large hole in it.
- The mini-van spun around and erupted on fire.
- A Good Samaritan attempted to put the fire out, but was unsucessful.
- A CHP officer was there immediately on the scene and went down to the burning victim.
- The victim was trapped inside as the mini-van was fully engulfed in flames.
- Officer Steve Reardon grabbed a fire extinguisher and broke the driver’s side window with his baton. He then battled the heavy smoke and heat and used the extinguisher to keep the flames at bay.
- SDFD firefighters arrived quickly and fought the fire, which burned for a long time.
- Once the fire was out, the firefighters extricated the male victim and rushed him to the UCSD Burn Center in an unknown condition.
- Officer Reardon is the officer on the left speaking with his Sargent
- The CHP is investigating.
