Driver Killed After Smashing Into Steel Utility Pole

Phoenix Police and Fire crews from the cities of Phoenix and Glendale responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision.
Officers arrived to find a Nissan Altima that left the roadway and struck a metal utility pole at high speed.
The vehicle was on fire with the driver trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived on scene and began working to extinguish the flames while additional firefighters worked to extricate the trapped driver.
Once cut from the vehicle, the unidentified driver was transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition.
Phoenix Police on scene later confirmed that the driver was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Officers have established a closure for northbound 51st Avenue spanning between MacKenzie Drive and Glenrosa Avenue.
The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours while Phoenix Police Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives investigate the collision.
