Deputy Nunez Killed While Responding to a Domestic Violence

On October 27, 2025, at approximately 12:37 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 12300 block of Hollyhock Street in Rancho Cucamonga for reports of an armed Hispanic male threatening a female during a domestic violence incident.
At 12:42 p.m., deputies arrived on scene and were immediately met with gunfire. One deputy, later identified as 6-year veteran Deputy Nunez, was struck in the head by a single gunshot wound. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at 1:13 p.m.
The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit along the eastbound 210 Freeway. The chase ended around 1:35 p.m. near Campus Avenue, where the suspect crashed and was taken into custody with injuries.
Sheriff Shannon D. Dicus confirmed that Deputy Nunez leaves behind his wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and that his wife is currently expecting. He is also survived by his mother and four siblings.
District Attorney Jason Anderson stated that charges including murder of a peace officer and domestic violence are being considered pending the outcome of the investigation. The suspect remains hospitalized in stable condition and will be interviewed once medically cleared.
Video from the scene shows the suspect being airlifted following the termination of the pursuit, as well as a heavy police and fire presence at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
