Crash at Tomas Rivera Middle School Injures Nine | Mead Valley
03.16.2022 | 1:14 PM | MEAD VALLEY (CNS) – Nine people — none of them children — were injured Wednesday when a car crashed into a building at a Mead Valley grade school.
The crash was reported about 1:15 p.m. at Tomas Rivera Middle School in the 21600 block of Martin Street, near Clark Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews and ambulance personnel were sent to the location, along with sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers, who found a Toyota Corolla smashed into one of the buildings on the west side of the campus, which takes up nearly an entire city block.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, for reasons still under investigation, (went) in a southeasterly direction and collided into the building,” CHP Officer Juan Quintero said. “No students were involved in this crash.”
The CHP was assigned the investigation because it handles all vehicular incidents in the unincorporated areas, under a long-standing contract with the county.
The motorist, whose identity was not released, was among the injured adults, according to the fire department.
An agency spokeswoman said three victims suffered moderate injuries, and six suffered minor injuries. All of them were taken to hospitals for further treatment and evaluation.
“Alcohol or drug impairment is not suspected,” Quintero said.
No one was arrested, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the CHP spokesman.
The campus was placed on lockdown because of the crash, and students were kept in classrooms for their own safety until shortly after 3 p.m., according to the Val Verde Unified School District.
