Corona: SWAT Standoff Ends With Man Found Dead
09.22.2019 | 4:20 PM | CORONA – An hours long standoff that started when a man doused his estranged white with gasoline ended with the suspect being found dead, early Sunday morning.
Authorities responded to a neighbor reporting a domestic dispute in the 2000 block of Picadilly Way around 4:15 PM.
While en route officers were alerted that an involved party had also called 911 to report he estranged husband had assaulted her before dousing her with gasoline and threatening to light her on fire.
Units arriving on scene learned the female victim along with her daughter had ran to a neighbors home to seek shelter and that the suspect, later identified as 56-year-old Richard Herrera was barricaded inside the home.
Herrera briefly exited the home and poured what was believed to be gasoline on himself before retreating inside.
After several hours of attempting to contact Herrera a SWAT team made entry to the home where they discovered him deceased from apparent suicide.
The female victim suffered only minor injuries and was treated on scene.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance and resulting standoff is underway.
