Construction Worker Shot and Killed in South Los Angeles

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on January 21st, 2026, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of 74th Street and Van Ness Avenue in South Los Angeles.

First responders located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. The victim collapsed on the curb and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators later confirmed the man was a construction worker who had been working at the location with several other workers at the time of the shooting.

According to information gathered at the scene, the victim had just returned from fixing a doorknob at his sister’s home when the shooting occurred. A helper who had been working with the victim was nearby but was reportedly too afraid to speak, stating he did not know why the victim was shot. Authorities said the victim was not believed to be gang-affiliated.

Family members arrived at the scene visibly distraught as homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner conducted their investigation and removed the body from the scene.

No suspect information or motive was released. The shooting remained under investigation by LAPD’s 77th Street Division.
