Chevron Refinery Fire
INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 9-25-25 | 9:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Chevron El Segundo Refinery
AREA/CITY: El Segundo
DETAILS:
On September 25th, 2025, around 9:30 p.m., an explosion and fire broke out at the Chevron El Segundo Refinery, one of California’s largest fuel producers.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast followed by flames visible for miles. The fire began in the refinery’s Isomax 7 unit, which processes fuel oil into jet fuel, and burned for more than nine hours before being fully extinguished early Friday morning.
Emergency crews from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach worked with Chevron’s response teams to contain the blaze. A brief shelter-in-place order was issued nearby, but no evacuations or injuries were reported.
Officials said the shutdown could impact fuel prices statewide. Air quality levels, which were elevated overnight, returned to normal by morning. Chevron and state agencies are investigating the cause.
