Car Levitates On Broken Hydrant After DTLA Crash

A car was left partially suspended by the force of water from a broken fire hydrant following a crash involving an MTA bus early Sunday morning in Downtown Los Angeles.

At approximately 4:21 a.m. on August 23, 2026, emergency crews responded to 5th and Spring streets, near The Last Bookstore, following a collision involving a passenger vehicle and an MTA bus.

The crash broke a fire hydrant, leaving the passenger vehicle directly on top of it. Water rushing from the damaged hydrant was powerful enough to partially lift the vehicle off the ground until firefighters were able to shut off a valve in the street.

One passenger aboard the 720 bus to Santa Monica complained of possible injuries, prompting a request for an ambulance.

According to a witness at the scene, the driver of the passenger vehicle walked away following the collision, leaving the damaged car behind.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
