Car Crashes Through Overpass, Falls Onto Houston Freeway

Three women were injured after a vehicle crashed through an overpass barrier and fell onto the Southwest Freeway Wednesday evening in Houston.

At approximately 8:00 p.m. on July 22, 2026, emergency crews responded to the interchange of the Southwest Freeway and the Sam Houston Tollway after reports of a vehicle falling from an HOV overpass onto the freeway below.

According to Metro Police Lieutenant Crowson, the vehicle struck the concrete barrier before crashing through the overpass wall and landing on the Southwest Freeway.

Three female occupants were transported to area hospitals in stable condition.

Video from the scene showed firefighters navigating heavy traffic to reach the crash site, while investigators documented the scene below. A large hole in the overpass barrier could also be seen above the freeway, marking where the vehicle broke through before falling.

Because the crash occurred on the HOV lanes, Metro Police has jurisdiction over the investigation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
