Camp Pendleton: Brush Fire Prompts Closure of I-5 Freeway

01.29.2020 | 6:10 PM | CAMP PENDLETON – A brush fire believed to be caused by a transformer explosion prompted a freeway closure, Wednesday evening.

Authorities responded to reports of a transforming shooting out sparks near the I-5 Freeway between Basilone and Cristianitos around 6:10 PM.

Units arriving on scene located an approximately 1/2 acre brush fire burning in medium brush and winds with power lines down.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire but another spot fire broke out across the freeway prompting a second response.

Both fires were quickly contained within 45 minutes but a full freeway closure resulted as crews mopped up.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire but it is believed the flames were started by a transformer explosion that sent sparks flying in the wind.
