Bakersfield: Suspect Dead, Passenger Injured After Vehicle Shoots At Officers While Fleeing
04.18.2020 | 12:42 AM | BAKERSFIELD – A suspect who fired on officers while fleeing was dead and a passenger who was riding in his vehicle was injured, early Saturday morning.
Authorities responded to reports of a shots fired in the 300 block of May Street in Oildale.
Deputies arriving on scene learned that the occupant of a vehicle that fled the area had fired the shots.
A short time later the suspect vehicle was spotted by deputies who attempted to perform a traffic stop.
The suspect failed to yield leading the deputies on a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase the suspect opened fire on officers before his vehicle became disabled at the intersection of California Avenue and Mervyn’s Place in Bakersfield and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The driver of the vehicle was struck pronounced deceased on scene.
A passenger from the vehicle refused to exit prompting a standoff that ended when a SWAT team fired less-lethal ammunition and subdued the individual.
No deputies were injured in the incident and the area surrounding the pursuit termination and deadly deputy-involved shooting was closed while detectives investigated.
