Arizona DPS Stops Vehicle Using The Grappler Device | Phoenix

01.27.2022 | 10:00 PM | PHOENIX – AZDPS responded to a rolling domestic violence situation on the I-17 Durango Curve around 10pm Thursday evening.

The reporting party stated she was being followed by a known suspect following an altercation in the City of Tempe.

The RP stated the suspect was following her closely in a gold Mercedes SUV and armed with a firearm.

DPS Metro Central units located the vehicle on city streets near 27th Avenue and Durango Street.

The decision was made to utilize a Grappler device which was just recently placed into service for the Metro Central district.

Due to the nature of the call troopers chose to deploy the Grappler device to stop the vehicle as quickly as possible rather than chance a possible pursuit.

The vehicle was brought to a sudden stop near 19th Avenue and the Eastbound access road for I-17.

Troopers with assistance from the Phoenix Police Department performed a high risk traffic stop detaining the male suspect and a male passenger.

The victim was able to meet with Troopers at a safe location away nearby.

According to a Captain with AZDPS this is the Metro Central District graveyard squad’s first Grappler device deployment since adding the newly outfitted cruisers to their overnight fleet.
