5 People Transported in Major Injuries I-5 Crash | National City

04.19.2022 | 5:08 AM | NATIONAL CITY – The dark-colored vehicle ran out of gas and was stalled in the #3 lane. The male driver made no effort to get the vehicle over to the right shoulder and the male driver of the silver car slammed into the rear of the dark car. A truck was then hit in the rear by the dark car. There were 3 males and 1 female in the stalled car. The male driver suffered a major head injury. A male passenger in the rear suffered acute injuries and was rushed to UCSD Hospital as he was not breathing. The other male passenger in the rear had minor injuries and the female in the front passenger seat suffered serious injuries. The male driver of the silver vehicle had minor injuries. The one male in the truck was not injured. In total, 5 people were transported to area hospitals. An AMR crew and 2 Federal Police Officers happened upon the accident and started to help treat the victims The CHP eventually shut down all but. the #1 & #2 lanes and this caused a backup of northbound traffic from both the Hwy 54 transition ramp and the I-5 traffic. UPDATE from the CHP: 8:00 am The driver of the car with the Mexican plates and the head injury has been arrested for DUI and a Blood tech has been sent to Mercy hospital to draw blood from the driver. The 1st male that was transported with the life-threatening injuries went into CPR status while on his way to the hospital while in the ambulance.
