12 Hospitalized After Tour Bus Crashes Into Semi

Twelve people were hospitalized after a tour bus carrying 36 people crashed into the back of a semi-truck Sunday afternoon on Interstate 5 near Encinitas.

At approximately 5:26 p.m. on August 10, 2026, emergency crews responded to southbound I-5 near the La Jolla Viewpoint/rest area following reports of a traffic collision.

The first arriving engine reported a tour bus had collided with the rear of a semi-truck.

Due to the number of people involved, crews established a mass casualty response and coordinated with multiple hospitals.

A total of 12 patients were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to serious. Six additional people were evaluated at the scene but declined transportation.

The bus was carrying 36 people at the time of the collision.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
